Why Ball Valves are Shut-off Valves

2026-02-05

1.  Structure of a Ball Valve: It is primarily composed of the valve body, ball, seat, stem, upper chamber, lower chamber, sealing device, and actuation device. The main Ball valve product names of China Ball valve Network include:GB Cast Steel Fixed Ball Valve,GB Forged Steel Fixed Ball Valve,High Pressure Inner Thread Ball Valve,High Pressure Three-section Ball Valve,High Temperature Integrated Ball Valve,Insulation Pneumatic Cut Off Ball Valve,Internal And External Teeth Brass Ball Valve (Butterfly Handle Type),Internal And External Teeth Brass Ball Valve,L-type, T-type Pneumatic Three-way Ball Valve

2.  Working Principle: The operation of a ball valve is intuitive and efficient, making it a typical 90-degree rotary shut-off valve.Ball Valves

Opening Process: When the operator rotates the stem counterclockwise via a handle or actuator, the stem drives the internal ball to rotate approximately 90 degrees. Once the axis of the bore through the ball becomes parallel to the pipeline axis, the flow path is completely unobstructed, allowing fluid to pass through freely. The valve is now in the fully open state.Ball Valve Products

Closing Process: Conversely, when the stem is rotated clockwise by 90 degrees, the ball turns accordingly, positioning its bore axis perpendicular to the pipeline axis. At this point, the solid portion of the ball completely blocks the flow path. Sealing is achieved by the tight compression between the ball surface and the elastic seats on both sides, placing the valve in the fully closed state. This switch between "straight-through" and "complete block" results in minimal flow resistance and rapid actuation (typically a quarter-turn).

3.  Reasons Against Throttling (Why they must be used fully open or closed):

To Prevent Erosion Damage to Sealing Surfaces: In a partially open position, high-velocity fluid carrying impurities concentrates impact on the local contact area between the seat and the ball's sealing surface, causing scratching or erosion, which compromises seal integrity.

To Avoid Permanent Deformation of the Seat: For soft seats (e.g., PTFE), being held in a partially compressed state under uneven medium pressure for prolonged periods can cause the material to undergo "cold flow" or plastic deformation. This creates a step-like indentation on the sealing surface, preventing proper sealing thereafter.

To Prevent Impingement and Scratching by Trapped Debris: The partially open state facilitates the accumulation and embedding of debris into the seat surface. During subsequent opening or closing operations, this debris acts as an abrasive, severely scratching the precision sealing surfaces of both the ball and the seat.
